Luft 7 Indianapolis was nothing short of excellent. It had been two achingly long years since the premier air-cooled cognoscenti put on Luft 6 in the Universal Studios backlot, an event I thought was their opus, only to be once again topped by Luft in Indianapolis. The dramatic industrial aesthetics of the Indianapolis Bottleworks District provided a tribute to the beauty of functional form, so defining of the Porsche tradition. The many creative minds behind Luft masterfully arranged the icons of Porsche lore typically only gazed upon with wonderment in tomes on the German marque’s storied history. Each car presents a visual narrative with the surroundings in which it is carefully staged encouraging the perfect photograph, such as a one of six center-seat 718 RSK with its gleaming alloy body in beautiful juxtaposition with the well-weathered brick walls surrounding it. Or, an inimitable 993 Supercup below a theatre marquee and being able to hear racing driver, and builder of safari 911s, Leh Keen rev the sonorous flat-six of his Coors liveried 911 RSR build. I am always amazed at the wonderfully pure distillation of the Porsche community Luft events convey. The boundaries of art, design, culture, and history are transcended in a wonderful gathering where Porsche enthusiasts are able to hear, see, and smell the most excellent examples of the greatest sports car. I am already counting down the days in impatient anticipation of Luft 8.
